In addition to being a virtuoso soloist, (Discography) John Stowell has been called an inspiration to students of all levels of musical sophistication because of his wonderful ability to translate complicated theory into meaningful insights and creative applications with his hands-on, pragmatic, intuitive teaching style. As a result of the experience gained from many years of national and international touring, he also is able to share extremely valuable information on the "business" of the music business and salient tips about self promotion, not found in any book.
The purpose of his clinic is to provide insights into the creative, musical processes for both the musician/student and listener. An informal performance is followed by an open ended question and answer session covering topics ranging from the nature of improvisation and harmony to elements of the music business and self-promotion. In a master class setting, specific demonstration of scales and scale substitutions and chord construction and embellishment will also be addressed, as well as a Midi performance and explanation of synthesizer applications for the guitar. Students are also encouraged to play, both in ensembles and individually to be evaluated constructively if they desire.
